The Department of Journalism, Media, and Digital Communication at the University of Jordan’s (UJ) School of Arts hosted filmmaker and assistant professor at Luminus Technical University College, Dr. Ahmad Al-Faleh, for a specialized lecture on the applications of semiotic analysis in cinematic work.

During the lecture, which was attended by Chair of the Department, Dr. Yasmin Aldamen, along with students, Dr. Al-Faleh explained that semiotics plays a significant role in developing students’ critical and analytical thinking skills, which enhances their ability to engage consciously with media content, both as consumers and creators, particularly in an age marked by the expansion of digital and interactive platforms.

Al-Faleh, illustrated how digital elements and modern technologies are employed in filmmaking to convey visual messages and enrich the global dimension of cinematic works. He highlighted the role of technology in constructing deep visual meanings and interpretations within cinematic discourse.

In her remarks, Aldamen underscored the importance of integrating semiotic analysis into media studies curricula, especially in light of rapid digital transformation. She noted its essential role in fostering critical thinking and helping students comprehend the implicit messages embedded in media content and films.

Aldamen further explained that studying semiotic analysis enables media students to uncover the communicative messages hidden behind images, films, and media texts. This type of analysis, she said, allows students to deconstruct visual and linguistic symbols and signs and to identify the cultural and social connotations they carry, moving beyond superficial content interpretation.

The lecture saw active engagement from students, who were drawn to its rich content and the in-depth analysis of selected scenes from the acclaimed Jordanian film Theeb. Al-Faleh demonstrated how to deconstruct visual and auditory symbols and interpret costume design, lighting, camera movement, and music, showing how each contributes to the film’s overall meaning.

Al-Faleh also encouraged students to participate in discussions, analyze scenes themselves, and ask questions, which helped solidify their practical understanding of semiotic analysis and its applications across various media and cinematic contexts.

The event was attended by UJ President Nathir Obeidat, as well as deans of faculties, faculty members and university students.

Prince Hassan emphasised the need to rely on knowledge founded on absolute truth, and providing accurate and realistic data through a national knowledge database.

This shift is essential to move away from a “paternalistic approach” and instead foster collaboration among all sectors, empowering those in need and those working towards human dignity.

The prince underscored the significance of prioritising human dignity and empowerment through the adoption of a multidimensional poverty index, which many countries utilise to identify various forms of poverty and need.

He also highlighted the importance of legal empowerment for underprivileged people, emphasising key pillars such as access to justice, rule of law, property rights, labour rights and the right to engage in business activities.

Refugees and displaced individuals are directly affected by poverty, he said, stressing the need to recognise their capabilities and competencies to harness their potential and involve them in the development process to achieve effective inclusivity.

Prince Hassan emphasised that dialogue, understanding, mutual respect, deep awareness of our shared humanity and values, active citizenship, self-honesty, partnership, solidarity and global networking are all essential values when discussing freedom and the responsibility of expression.

He also highlighted the continuous construction of freedom through enlightenment and the revitalisation of the concept of responsible expression. He called for the establishment of comprehensive international humanitarian law and an ethical system for collective humanitarian solidarity, ensuring that the law works for everyone. He further stressed the need to “seriously” address mental health issues.

Following the lecture, a conversation took place between Prince Hassan and the students, which addressed the challenges faced by youth and the importance of developing programmes and policies to support and empower them.

The University of Jordan (UJ) President, Prof. Nathir Obeidat, emphasized Wednesday the importance of preserving the Arab language. He warned during the University’s celebrations of World Arabic Language Day that we risk losing our language if we merely admire its beauty and brilliance without actively placing it at the forefront of global human interaction.

This event, organized by the School of Arts, was attended by the university’s vice presidents, linguists, experts, cultural organizations, and a large audience of students.

Obeidat called on academics and students at UJ to celebrate the beauty of the Arabic language by embracing creativity, solving technological challenges, and preserving its rich literary and theological heritage. He emphasized the university community's role in showcasing the language's articulacy and sophistication, while fostering innovation and teaching the arts of rhetoric and grammar.

Obeidat expressed deep appreciation for advocates of the Arabic language, reaffirming its role as a cornerstone of Arab identity and the language of Islam. He also paid tribute to the pioneering scholars of UJ's Arabic Language Department, such as Naser Al-Din Al-Assad and Khaled Al-Karaki, urging the preservation of their enduring legacy in enriching the university’s cultural and intellectual heritage.

Dean of the School, Prof. Mohammad Qudah, highlighted the need to dedicate efforts to the Arabic language to enable its integration into scientific and intellectual progress. He stressed its role as a modernizing tool and a stronghold against cultural distortion and alienation.

Qudah noted that while Arabic faces numerous challenges, the most concerning issue is the waning confidence of its speakers, who have increasingly distanced themselves from their cultural and civilizational heritage. He emphasized that Arabic is a language of beauty, articulateness, and timelessness—a bridge connecting generations and cultures and a vital part of Arab identity.

Head of the Arabic Language Department, Dr. Muath Alzoubi, delivered three messages during his speech. The first came from the Arabic language itself, lamenting its potential demise if neglected. The second addressed Arabic scholars and faculty, urging unity and dedication to advancing the language. The third message encouraged students to aspire to elevate the language, viewing themselves as its guardians and advocates.

The celebration showcased a variety of cultural presentations including poetry recitation, a scientific symposium addressing the preservation and global presence of the Arabic language. Moderated by Dr. Abdullah Al-Anbar, the symposium featured insights from prominent figures such as Professor Ma’moun Hattab, Dr. Hanan Amayreh, Dr. Omar Al-Fajawi, and Dr. Youssef Bani Yaseen, highlighting Arabic as a symbol of heritage, identity, and a bridge between generations

The School of Arts at the University of Jordan (UJ) held the first national forum bringing together heads of Arabic language departments from public and private universities across the Kingdom.

The event was held under the patronage of the Dean of the School of Arts, Prof. Mohammad Ahmad Qudah, and was attended by vice and assistant deans, faculty members, and a distinguished group of linguists and poets from within and beyond the university.

Opening the forum, which was moderated by Dr. Murad Albayyari, Qudah emphasised that the Arabic language represents the nation’s identity, the hallmark of its civilisation, and the guardian of its cultural heritage. He noted that since the establishment of UJ’s Department of Arabic Language in 1962, the university has upheld Arabic’s esteemed status as the language of the Holy Qur’an and a luminous pillar among world languages. “We must continue to highlight its value and restore its brilliance, especially in the face of modern-day challenges,” he said.

Qudah also reaffirmed UJ’s commitment to enhancing students’ proficiency in Arabic, highlighting the mandatory “Language Skills” course for all students as a key step to counter linguistic decline in an age increasingly dominated by symbols, numbers, and “Arabizi” chat language.

For his part, Head of the Department of Arabic Language, Dr. Moath Al-Zu’bi, expressed pride in hosting the forum within the very department where many participants once studied. He stated that the gathering aims to unify academic efforts across Jordanian universities, aligning visions and strategies to serve the Arabic language and the cultural identity it embodies.

The one-day forum brought together leading scholars and researchers to explore strategies for safeguarding Arabic, diagnosing current challenges, and proposing practical measures to strengthen language instruction.

Participants identified several contributing factors behind the decline in language proficiency, including psychological and social pressures, competition from global languages, the spread of colloquial dialects, outdated curricula, and insufficient teacher engagement in cultivating a love for the language. They also emphasised the growing impact of digital technology and changing reading habits, both of which have further weakened students’ connection to classical Arabic
