School of Arts Trains Media Students on Mobile Journalism

The University of Jordan (UJ) hosted a workshop on Mobile Journalism for Television and Digital Reports and Its Ethics in the Digital Age, training students to produce high-quality reports using their smartphones.

Organized by the Department of Journalism and Digital Media, at the School of Arts, the event highlighted cost-effective methods for creating professional-level stories and documenting events, resembling video productions made with advanced equipment.

Conducted by journalist Haider Al-Abdali, a specialist in mobile journalism, the workshop provided practical training, emphasizing ethical practices, storytelling, video editing, and smartphone technology to create engaging reports. Students learned to utilize their phones to produce and share content effectively across digital platforms, catering to the rapid demands of modern media.

Chair of the Department of Journalism, Media, and Digital Communication, Dr. Yasmin Al Damen, emphasized the importance of holding such workshops, noting that we live in an era where technology is rapidly advancing and mobile phone has become an indispensable tool not only in our daily lives but also in the field of journalism and media. She added that the small device offers enormous power in gathering, distributing, and analyzing news at incredible speeds, highlighting that dealing with such power requires the use of these tools with high ethical standards, professional competence, and a commitment to accuracy and integrity in reporting.

The workshop, held under the patronage of the Dean of the School of Arts, Prof. Mohamed Al Qudah in the presence of the Chair of the Department of Journalism and Digital Media, Dr. Yasmeen Al-Damen, attracted wide participation, including students from journalism and media-related disciplines and ended in a competition for the best student-produced video or report.

Al-Abdali, correspondent for Al-Hurra Channel in Amman, and a specialist in mobile journalism, is the receiver of the Golden Peacock Award. Minister of Government Communication and official spokesperson for the government, Dr. Mohamed Al-Momani, handed Al-Abdali the award during the Global Communication Forum held in Jordan in November 2024.
